INGLEWOOD, Calif. — U.S. men’s national team players watched Bosnia and Herzegovina defeat Qatar while on their team bus back to their hotel after training on Wednesday, a result that means Bosnia is all-but-certain to be their opponent in the World Cup round of 32 on July 1.With a game Thursday against Turkey, however, the team has insisted they are focused on closing out the group with a win before turning their attention to the knockout phase.“We are aware that — obviously, crazy things can happen, we know this — but as of right now, it’s looking likely that that’s who we will have in the round of 32,” U.S. captain Tim Ream said of Bosnia. “And it’s the same as always, right? We have to obviously know who our opponents are. And we’ll obviously understand that more and more after tomorrow’s games. But it’s also, you know, we’re really just focused on ourselves and continuing what we’re doing within the group.”U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino didn’t answer a question about Bosnia on Wednesday in the press conference, instead pivoting his response to talk about the team he’ll put out against Turkey. Pochettino said it was an “easy answer” regarding players on a yellow card. Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams and Folarin Balogun won’t play.“I don’t think it’s necessary to take a risk and then take another yellow card and be not available for the next stage,” Pochettino said.Pochettino also said that Christian Pulisic is available — something the winger confirmed earlier on Wednesday — but said it is still being determined whether he will play from the start or come off the bench. The coach also said Cristian Roldan is being evaluated for a slight quadriceps issue and that if he’s not available tomorrow, he’ll hopefully be back “next week.”Asked if his analysts are already beginning to work on preparing for Bosnia, Pochettino answered instead about how winning the group after two games has given him freedom to choose a team that allows the U.S. the best chance to compete both against Turkey, but also with an eye on that round-of-32 game.“It’s important to think in all the circumstances and to make the best decisions for the team,” Pochettino said. “What we are thinking is to win tomorrow. Of course we are qualified, but we want to win. We are analyzing all the situations, the circumstances, and for sure we are going to take the best decision, the best starting 11 that we believe are ready to play and be sure that we are going to compete.“Win or not win depends on different situations, but for sure that we want to win and we want to arrive to the next stage with three victories, if that is possible.”Pochettino will make changes for the U.S.’s final game of the group. (Reuters / Albert Gea)Asked later about rotating players, Pochettino said that the staff is using a number of factors to decide which players to rest, including load management from their club seasons. He pointed to Malik Tillman, Sergiño Dest and Alex Freeman as players who might benefit from sitting after limited time at the end of the club season, as one example. He also implied that players on a yellow might not be able to approach Thursday’s game with the same mentality he wants from his team. In the back of their minds, they might be worried about picking up a second yellow and missing the knockouts.“My answer is: I need to be sure that the team that is going to be (on the field) tomorrow wants to eat the grass here in SoFi and play like this is the final of the World Cup,” Pochettino said. There are benefits to that rotation, with all players on the squad getting a chance to play games and to show their value. And in doing so, to put the U.S. in the best possible place to pick an ideal “starting 11 that we believe is going to be the best for the next (round),” Pochettino said.“Because at the end, that is the objective,” he added. “But (if you ask me:) ‘Do you want to win tomorrow?’ Of course. And you are going to be urgent, and are you going to push the starting 11 that is going to play? Yes. We need to perform tomorrow. We need to perform.“I have no doubt that the team that is going to play is going to perform.”Turkey’s campaign fell apart with consecutive defeats to Australia and Paraguay, to the dismay of head coach Vincenzo Montella.“I have put my heart, my life my passion. I dont want to resign , I have no desire, I have more to give,” Montella said. “If people want me to resign, they will have to wait.”
