An application has been filed to develop a data center in Seattle, Washington, in the same building that hosts Starbucks’ global HQ.As reported by BizJournal, Seattle Times, and the Registry, Colossus Data Center Advisors has filed to develop a data center at 2401 Utah Ave. S, in the Sodo area of Seattle.The sub-20MW data center would occupy a former Amazon Fresh retail store and distribution center in the building. Amazon exited the site around 2024.The data center would take up 20,000 square feet (1,860 sqm) of the six-story, 180,000-square-foot building at the southern end of the Sodo complex, and 25,600 sq ft (2,380 sqm) of the nine-story, 1.3 million-square-foot main building.The Starbucks Center (formerly the SODO Center) is the world headquarters of the coffeehouse chain Starbucks. Built in 1915 for Sears, the site totals 1.8 million sq ft (170,000 sqm), with the coffee chain as its largest tenant. Nitze‑Stagen & Co. purchased the building in 1990.Founded in 2014, Colossus is a specialized advisory firm focused on data centers. The company was previously involved in a since-dropped project to develop a data center in Kansas.Colossus didn’t reply to local press’ request for comment. The building owners told the Times that a conceptual site plan for a data center has been submitted to the city of Seattle to gauge feasibility, and no tenant has been secured.The 20MW facility would be just below the threshold for banned data centers under Seattle’s recently introduced data center moratorium.Digital Realty recently filed to develop a data center in Seattle at a former Bed Bath & Beyond store.Engineering consultant Pacland submitted preliminary plans for a data center at 3625 First Ave. S. in the Sodo neighborhood in April that would total up to 320,000 sq ft (29,730 sqm) across four stories.
