He made it! After overcoming endless visa battles and travel delays, DR Congo's legendary "living statue" superfan, Lumumba Vea, finally took his place on the pedestal at the 2026 World Cup in Mexico. Photo: IANS

For millions watching the 2026 Fifa World Cup, the stars have been the players dazzling on the pitch. But for DR Congo supporters, one of the tournament's most inspiring stories has come from a man who barely moves at all.

Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, better known around the world as "Lumumba Vea", meaning "Lumumba Lives", has become one of African football's most recognizable superfans.

Dressed as Congolese independence hero Patrice Lumumba, Mboladinga has earned global attention for his unique matchday ritual. Lumumba stands motionless like a living statue for an entire game, his right arm raised in salute while balanced on a small pedestal.

His presence became iconic during the Africa Cup of Nations, symbolising both patriotism and unwavering support for the Leopards. Yet when DR Congo finally qualified for their first World Cup in years, it appeared their most famous supporter would be left behind.
