SEOUL, June 24 (UPI) -- A North Korean soldier was taken into South Korean custody after crossing the heavily fortified Military Demarcation Line separating the two Koreas, Seoul's military said Wednesday.
"The military secured custody of a North Korean soldier on the central front Tuesday night, and relevant authorities are investigating the circumstances," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a message to reporters.
The JCS did not provide further details on the precise location, the soldier's identity or the motive for the crossing.
Yonhap News Agency reported that the soldier had expressed a desire to defect.
