Researchers at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin have identified some of the remains exhumed in the former village of Puzhnyky in the Ternopil region in the spring of 2025.
Andrzej Ossowski, a professor at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, told a Ukrinform correspondent about this during the search operations in Puzhnyky, which began on June 22.
“We have now examined all the remains that were found and established all the genetic profiles. This has allowed us to determine the final number. Based on genetic analyses, we can now say that we are dealing with at least 43 victims whose remains we have found,” said Ossowski.
According to him, thanks to a comparative analysis of genetic material collected from the descendants of Puzhnyky residents, the first individuals have been identified.
“We are using cutting-edge technologies in these analyses because many years have passed since the incident, and the living relatives are distant relatives of the deceased. This means that in these identifications, we are using, among other things, methods of genetic genealogy, which allow us to carry out such highly complex identifications,” Ossowski explained.
