Please try againTravel trends among Canadian residents shifted alongside the political tensions between Canada and the United States starting in early 2025.When comparing prior to this period, there’s a steep decline of 26.7 per cent in the number of trips by Canadians to the United States in April 2026 from April 2024, driven by 30.2 per cent fewer trips by automobile and 16.9 per cent fewer trips by air.U.S. residents took 1.5 million trips to Canada in April 2026, up 6.9 per cent from the same month in 2025. This marked the third consecutive monthly year-over-year increase of such trips. Compared with April 2024, the number of trips was down slightly by 1.5 per cent, mainly because of a 2.2 per cent decrease in trips by automobile.Meanwhile, Canadians made 1.4 million return trips from overseas countries outside of the U.S. in April, up 2.7 per cent year over year, while trips to Canada by overseas residents declined 6.7 per cent to 432,700.The total number of Canadian-resident trips from abroad including the U.S. was 3.8 million trips in April, an increase of 2.1 per cent year over year and the first year-over-year monthly increase since February 2025.
