For many, the port city of Volos is best known for its Tsipouradika or as the gateway to Mount Pelion and the Sporades. Those who linger love its broad, car-free waterfront promenade lined with sociable cafes and a marina full of sailboats at one end. Beyond that there’s a fleet of colorful fishing boats, some supplying those tsipouradika with the catch of the day. The western part of downtown, with its stores for agricultural supplies and marine equipment, hums with a sense of purpose. Then there is the city’s signature sweet treat, the rich and creamy “pasta fournou,” a local favorite that alone is worth the trip.
That would be more than enough to fill a pleasant weekend. Yet for lovers of art, architecture, and history, Volos offers far more than first meets the eye.
Most of the city’s cultural highlights are located within a three-kilometer radius, making Volos an ideal place to explore on foot.
