A shuttered incinerator outside Chicago, Illinois, is attracting interest from potential data center developers.NBC and the Chicago Tribune report several potential data center developers have shown interest in acquiring 13400 S Kedzie Ave in Robbins. The current owner of the Robbins Resource Recovery Center, Paul Duggan, has reportedly had at least five interested parties approach him about acquiring the property this year, all looking to use the 16-acre site for data center development. He is seeking around $25-30 million for the property.“The model we are looking at is three buildings on the property,” said Duggan. “Or it could be one owner and three tenants or one owner and one tenant, like a Microsoft.”Robbins Mayor Darren Bryant said he was open to the idea of a data center being developed at the site.“I know there are a lot of negative stories out there, but my job as mayor is to be innovative,” he told NBC. “Water, electricity, noise, pollution, and environmental all are concerns of mine too, but we are in the discovery phase. If we cannot solve those issues, it will never enter Robbins. We are in talks with the owner to explore.”Robbins is a village in Cook County, some 18 miles south of downtown Chicago. The incinerator site includes seven buildings, located along the Cal-Sag Canal. The waste-to-energy and recycling plant opened around 1997 and closed just a few years later in 2000 after its tax subsidies were removed. Designed to process more than 1,000 tons of trash a day, the site was previously earmarked for potential conversion to a natural gas and fertilizer plant around 2021.The site reportedly has a natural gas line that could be used as a potential power source.
