The first data center on Microsoft's campus in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, is now officially operational. The company revealed today, June 23, that it has fully completed construction on the data center, just over two years after the company first announced plans for the site. The Mount Pleasant campus is a "Fairwater" data center and part of a multi-building AI cluster. That the campus was set to go live was first revealed by CEO Satya Nadella in April 2026, when he posted on X that it was going live ahead of schedule; however, it was unclear at the time whether the site was operational or just approaching that milestone.Microsoft has developing in Mount Pleasant for several years, originally taking over land Foxconn was set to develop a manufacturing campus on. The cloud company broke ground at 90th Street in 2023. It was originally planned to develop 315 acres of land, featuring three large buildings with a combined 1.2 million sq ft (111,485 sqm).Construction required 46.6 miles (74.9km) of deep foundation piles, 26.5 million pounds of structural steel, 120 miles (193km) of medium-voltage underground cable, and 72.6 miles (116.8km) of mechanical piping. The cloud company gained approval for another 1,000-acre expansion later in 2023. Since then, it has been busy buying up the land it needs to make this happen, including a 160-acre parcel it acquired for $43 million in August last year.In January 2026, Microsoft received approval for an additional 15 data center buildings on the campus.“With our Fairwater data center now fully operational, Wisconsin is now home to the world’s most powerful supercomputer,” said Brad Smith, vice chair and president, Microsoft.“This campus will help power the next generation of AI innovation globally and provide long-term economic opportunity locally through hundreds of highly skilled jobs and continued investment in the region.”David DeGroot, Village President, added: “This is a historic milestone for Mount Pleasant and all of Racine County as we become home to one of the most advanced technology campuses in the world. Microsoft’s decision to invest here elevates our community into a destination for innovation and advancement."Microsoft estimates that, between 2024 and 2028, it will have invested $4.7bn locally on hyperscale construction in the state.Construction on a second facility in Mount Pleasant is ongoing and is expected to be completed in 2028.Mount Pleasant is located in Racine County, and is approximately 30 miles (48.2km) south of Milwaukee and 60 miles (96.5km) north of Chicago.Microsoft also launched a Fairwater site in Atlanta, Georgia, in November 2025.
