The new school year in September will see the closure of 75 school units due to declining enrolment nationwide, alongside the opening of 16 new schools, the Education Ministry has announced.

The closures include 43 kindergartens and 32 primary schools, many of which had already suspended operations because of a lack of pupils.

At the same time, a new primary school will open in Vothonas on the island of Santorini, while 10 new secondary schools and five new special education schools will be established across the country.

As part of a broader restructuring of the school network, 70 kindergartens will be merged into 33 units, while 12 primary schools will be consolidated into six units.
