Rangers are circling Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with a potential deal valued at around £8 million. The 26-year-old, currently on loan at Championship side Millwall, has emerged as a key target for the Scottish club as they look to bolster their squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The price tag and the negotiation game
Sunderland reportedly values Patterson in the £8 million to £10 million range. For a goalkeeper with two years left on his contract, that’s a number designed to start a conversation, not end one.
Kieron Brady, a former Sunderland midfielder, has described £8 million as a significant amount for a goalkeeper in the current market.
A Football Insider contributor has suggested that Rangers will likely negotiate that figure down to closer to £5 million plus performance-related add-ons. That structure would make the deal more palatable for Rangers while still giving Sunderland a respectable return on an academy graduate they’ve already decided they can live without, at least on a temporary basis.
