Mayibuye Mandela was assaulted by police in the Eastern Cape on May 8 2021
Nelson Mandela’s great-grandson was kicked and beaten with a stick by police officers after he was stopped while driving a bakkie near Mthatha.
The assault was so severe that Mayibuye Mandela was left with a bruised, mud-caked face and too afraid to seek medical help until the following morning.
Acting Mthatha High Court Judge Masonwabe Mhambi ruled Mandela must be compensated for the brutal assault.
He ordered the office of acting police minister Firoz Cachalia to pay damages, with the final amount now being hammered out.
