Eight persons have been killed in a violent clash between farmers and herders in Gulma Town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, the police have confirmed.
The Kebbi State Police Command disclosed that the victims included one farmer and seven herders, while five persons, including a woman, were rescued by security operatives during the violence.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command's spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, said the incident occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Monday when a herder identified as Yaron Buba-Dogo allegedly allowed his cattle to stray into the farmland of one Alhaji Aminu Ala, resulting in the destruction of crops.
According to the police, an altercation broke out between the two men, during which the farmer was allegedly stabbed in the neck by the herder and died on the spot.
The killing reportedly triggered anger among residents of the area, who mobilised and attacked the herder, killing him and setting his body ablaze.
