Recent thefts of military weapons from South Africa's defence force highlight a critical security crisis, revealing systemic failures within the defence force and raising urgent questions about national security. The defence force and the police have successfully conducted intelligence-driven operations in Mooiplaas, Pretoria, leading to the recovery of some of the stolen military weapons.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF), in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), has registered success in intelligence-driven operations in Mooiplaas, Pretoria, resulting in the recovery of stolen military weapons and the arrest of three suspects.
The defence force announced in a statement on Tuesday that a joint SANDF-SAPS team “mobilised on foot” and arrested two foreign nationals and recovered a multiple grenade launcher and an R4 assault rifle.
“The suspects appeared before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on 08 June 2026, where bail was denied. The case was remanded to 19 June 2026,” the SANDF said.
It said the team, reinforced by members of the SANDF’s 13 Provost Company, went out on another operation in Mooiplaas on Wednesday last week and arrested another foreign national and recovered one multiple grenade launcher.
