The Tech Sovereignty Commissioner Henna Virkkunen has so far not used the term 'kill switch'
During Euractiv‘s Tech Policy Conference on Tuesday, the Commission’s Director for Future Networks, Thibaut Kleiner, acknowledged the existence of a US government “kill switch” on the IT services US companies provide to foreign entities.
The concept of a ‘kill switch’ refers to the US government’s authority to order its homegrown companies to shut down their IT services for foreign companies or individuals, a topic of intense debate in Europe. So far, most EU officials, including Tech Sovereignty Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, have refrained from mentioning the term “kill switch” in official statements.
“I think the recent period has shown that there is something called a kill switch somewhere”, Kleiner said during his keynote address.
On 13 June, the United States government imposed a ban on Anthropic’s AI models, Fable and Mythos, for anyone who was neither headquartered in the United States nor a citizen of the country.
