High school students must write exams in almost all subjects starting this fall — including gym, art and tech — and if they miss more than two classes per semester for “unexcused absences” will start to be docked marks, the Doug Ford government announced Monday morning.

“We made the change because we were talking to a lot of educators across the province, (and) some of the things that we heard constantly from educators is that they needed a better control of their classrooms, and that certainly at the secondary level, attendance and participation is one way of doing that,” Education Minister Paul Calandra said at an announcement for a new digital platform for classrooms at a North York school.
