Senior Counsel and People's Liberation Party (PLP) presidential aspirant, Martha Karua, has reportedly been detained by Ugandan authorities at Entebbe International Airport after being denied entry into the East African country.

The development has sparked concerns over her whereabouts and raised fresh questions about the treatment of lawyers representing opposition figures in Uganda.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Martha Karua’s Executive Office, Karua arrived in Uganda from Kenya aboard a Kenya Airways flight alongside the President of the Law Society of Kenya, Charles Kanjama, to attend a court ruling on a bail application in the case involving prominent lawyer and former Kampala Lord Mayor, Elias Lukwago.

While Kanjama, according to the statement, was allowed into Uganda, Karua, who serves as lead counsel for detained Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye and his co-accused, Obeid Lutale, was allegedly stopped by immigration officials and detained at Entebbe Airport.
