Volunteers who braved Sunday morning's cold celebrate after cleaning up about a kilometre stretch of the Apies River in Tshwane. About a ton of trash was collected during the cleanup led by ASEZ WAO members.

The water coursing through the Apies River in the Tshwane region is cleaner than usual this week following a clean-up campaign by ASEZ WAO, a global young adult worker volunteer group, over the weekend.

The annual and nationwide clean-up campaign is part of the group’s Blue Oceans project. Sunday's clean-up was supported by the City of Tshwane which provided garbage bags, cleaning tools, and snacks for the volunteers.

An official from ASEZ WAO, which is part of the World Mission Society Church of God, said: “The Apies River is a natural environment that plays a vital role in the lives of local residents and the surrounding ecosystem, but recently, water pollution issues have arisen due to the inflow of domestic wastewater and the trash littering.”

“As the restoration of the river is directly linked to the sustainable environment of the local community, young adults have come together to reflect on the value of the river and protect it,” the official added.
