It does not take much to bring change. Sometimes all you need is an unwavering belief in yourself and a little empathy. Don’t believe us? Then the inspiring story of 23-year-old Delhi-based boy Aman Sharma can change your mind. A die-hard animal-lover with a deep passion for birdwatching, this young man has made a bold statement on environmental conservation by turning his 15,00 sq feet terrace into an urban forest. Yes, you read that right. Now, his terrace, dotted with countless plants, has become the abode of multiple bird and butterfly species. How a young boy developed a love for wildlifeAs per a report by The Better India, Aman Sharma’s devotion towards wildlife conservation began at an early age when his parents used to take him to bird sanctuaries and national parks across the country during his school summer vacations. The exposure brought him closer to birds and animals and Aman, a climate justice activist and a youth wildlife conservationist, developed a hobby for birdwatching and wildlife photography. Aman Sharma, who is currently pursuing environmental studies in the US, revealed that he embarked on bird walks in the National Capital and even posted his rare or common finds on Instagram to raise awareness about the diverse species of birds in Delhi. At 14, he and 2 other like-minded kids from Delhi established a birding club called Cuckoo About Nature Club. But during the COVID-19-induced lockdown in 2020, his bird walks came to a halt, and so did his photography. A mini rooftop jungle in a metro city Instead of simply waiting for the right time, Aman Sharma decided to turn his terrace into a mini jungle. From a barren space used to store construction equipment, Aman transformed the area into a lush green patch by planting hundreds of native plants after thorough research. At present, his rooftop boasts over 500 plant species, attracting more than 100 types of birds and over 25 butterfly species. ‘Whenever I go out, I always keep an eye out for finding a cutting or sapling of a plant. Besides, I have travelled across Delhi, visiting forests to collect plant cuttings,’ shared Aman Sharma, as quoted by The Better India. Aman has been actively addressing the climate crisis around the world. He has been part of several national and international campaigns and initiatives to combat climate change, even speaking his mind and sharing his journey at the 75th UNGA & the Nobel Peace Center.
