Motorists often overestimate how aware they are on the road, with new research showing that many drivers fail to notice obvious hazards such as pedestrians walking alongside a highway.
How observant are you on the road? Wait, did you just see that pedestrian walking on the side of the highway?
According to new research conducted by UK insurance expert MoneySuperMarket, the vast majority of drivers don't notice significant details like those.
Participants were asked to watch a short traffic clip before describing what they saw, and the vast majority missed a pedestrian walking along the side of the road. This is despite the fact that 75% of the 1,000 motorists who participated said they felt confident that they noticed everything important. In fact, 61% said they considered themselves more aware of their surroundings than other road users.
Interestingly, 91% of those who didn't notice the pedestrian were over the age of 55, while just 22% of those aged between 25 and 34 missed this potential hazard.
