Construction activity across the European Union continued to expand in April 2026, extending a modest upward trend, while Bulgaria recorded a slight monthly decline, according to Eurostat data.
Across the EU, construction production increased by 0.8% compared with March, following a stronger rise of 2.1% in the previous month. In the euro area, output also grew, expanding by 0.6% after a 1.7% increase in March, signaling a continued but uneven recovery in the sector.
Several member states posted particularly strong monthly gains. Romania led the bloc with a sharp 10.3% increase in construction production, followed by Hungary at 6.9% and Slovenia at 3.6%, reflecting robust activity in parts of Central and Southeastern Europe.
By contrast, Bulgaria registered a marginal monthly contraction of 0.1% in April, after a 0.2% decline in March, indicating continued short-term volatility in domestic construction activity. Other notable declines were observed in Slovakia, where output fell by 6.7%, the Netherlands by 2.2%, and Belgium by 1.6%.
On a year-on-year basis, however, the picture appears more positive. EU construction output rose by 1.5% in April after a 0.6% increase in March, while the euro area recorded growth of 0.9%, improving from a weaker 0.2% increase in the previous month.
