Manchester United appears to have won the charm offensive for one of the Premier League’s most coveted young midfielders. Mateus Fernandes, the 21-year-old Portuguese talent currently at West Ham United, has made his preference clear: he wants to move to Old Trafford this summer.

What makes that preference striking is the company he’s turning down. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham Hotspur have all shown interest. Fernandes, apparently, would rather rebuild with United than take the glamour route to the Bernabeu or the Parc des Princes.

The price tag problem

West Ham are reportedly valuing Fernandes between £80 million and £85 million. That’s more than double the £38 million they paid Southampton for him in August 2025.

Manchester United have already tested the waters with an opening bid. It was rejected. The gap between what United are willing to pay and what West Ham are demanding remains significant enough that this transfer is far from a formality.
