Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister just days after Andy Burnham’s decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election.

The Prime Minister has been under intense pressure for weeks, with more than 100 Labour MPs calling on him to quit in the wake of the party’s devastating performance in May’s local elections.

No 10 said on Monday that Starmer’s position remained unchanged from Friday, when he said he will not “walk away” from Downing Street and will stand in any potential contest.

But the Prime Minister is reported to have been told by senior members of his Cabinet, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, that he should set out a timetable for his departure.

Peter Kyle, the business secretary, said on Sunday that Starmer had spent the weekend at Chequers with his family, reflecting on “political realities” and thinking about “what’s in the best interests of the country”.
