An earthquake with preliminary magnitude 4.2 struck near the uninhabited Strofades islets off western Greece Monday, authorities said.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the undersea quake had an epicenter 59 kilometers west of the islets, and occurred at 6:30 a.m. at a depth of 7.8 kilometers.

Lying southwest of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, both the Strofades islets are uninhabited and have important bird populations.

A striking 13th century fortified monastery that stands on the bigger of the two islets has suffered significant earthquake damage in past decades. There were no immediate reports as to whether it was affected by Monday’s quake.
