The acquisition gives MDA a stronger foothold in the U.S. defense market, especially in classified government work. Blue Canyon, a Colorado-based spacecraft and satellite component maker, already has a security clearance that allows it to pursue sensitive U.S. programs. That is a key piece of the deal for MDA, which has been looking to grow beyond its mostly commercial business.
Blue Canyon’s business is heavily tied to defense. MDA CEO Mike Greenley said about 75% of Blue Canyon’s revenue is defense-related, while most of its $3.5 billion opportunity pipeline is also tied to that market.
“With the U.S. being the largest available defense market in the world, it creates a larger opportunity for us to support the U.S. government and its defense interests,” Greenley said.
MDA Pushes Deeper into Defense
MDA’s current business mix is roughly 70% commercial and 30% government. The Blue Canyon deal could shift that balance over time as defense and national security space spending become a bigger part of the company’s growth story.
