While 96.66% students took the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) held on May 3 in the district, only 76.87% candidates appeared for the re-test held on Sunday. Of the 6,559 candidates allotted for the district, 5,042 appeared for the re-test held in 11 centres, while 1,517 did not turn up.In Thoothukudi district, 1,481 candidates (428 boys and 1,053 girls) of the allotted strength of 2,015 (567 boys and 1,448 girls) appeared for the re-test.In Kanniyakumari district, which had 10 centres, more than 3,800 candidates appeared for the re-test out of 4,500.After thorough frisking, the candidates were allowed to enter the centres, where Central and State police personnel and a medical team with ambulance had been deployed. Special buses were operated from bus stands close to the centres so that the candidates using public transport could reach the centres on time.After the widespread charges of question paper leak in several parts of the country, the NEET conducted on May 3 was cancelled by the National Testing Agency, which conducts the test for admission to undergraduate medical courses.
