Bafana Bafana’s Fifa World Cup 2026 campaign is beginning to develop a troubling identity — not defined by how they finish games, but how they start them.

Across their opening two Group A fixtures, Hugo Broos’ side have been repeatedly exposed in the opening phase of matches, conceding early and immediately changing the entire tactical rhythm of their games.

Against Mexico, Bafana were breached with the defensive unit of Nkosinathi Sibisi, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Ime Okon struggling to settle into the tempo of the match as Mexico struck early and controlled large portions of the contest.

In the second match against Czech Republic, Broos adjusted personnel, starting Mbokazi and Okon in a reshaped defensive structure. But the pattern remained unchanged. Michal Sadílek’s early strike inside five minutes once again punished South Africa before they had fully settled, forcing Bafana into another game of chase.
