Four waterbombing aircraft were helping a small ground force of firefighters and volunteers battle a wildfire on the island of Syros in the Cyclades Sunday, authorities said.
Civil protection officials issued an alert for residents of the nearby Tria Laggonia area to evacuate their homes for the island capital of Ermoupoli.
The cause of the blaze near Anbela on southern Syros was not immediately clear. Most of Greece’s summer wildfires are attributed to negligence, despite widespread fears of arson.
Earlier Sunday, firefighters near Corinth in southern Greece brought under control a forest blaze near the village of Skalosia, the Fire Service said. In Rodopi, northern Greece, a wildfire that had broken out near Maroneia was also brought under control Sunday.
Attica, Evia, Corinthia and the Argolid in the Peloponnese, and Crete are at a high risk of wildfire Monday.
