Voting has commenced in the seven local government areas of Rivers South-East Senatorial District where the by-election is being held.

The local government areas are Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme, Andoni, Opobo-Nkoro and Oyigbo.

The by-election is being conducted to fill the vacancy created by the death of the former senator representing the district, Barry Mpigi, who died in February.

Our correspondent reports that there was a large turnout of voters at B-Dere Ward 4 in Gokana LGA, which comprises 21 polling units.

However, heavy rainfall on Saturday morning delayed the distribution of election materials to some wards, resulting in the late commencement of accreditation in parts of the district. Accreditation and voting later went on simultaneously in affected areas.
