Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary P. Shanmugam stated that AIADMK members continuously joining the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was not healthy politics. He was here to attend the inauguration ceremony of the CPI(M) office at Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district. Following the inauguration, Mr. Shanmugam said, “Only the TVK, which secured the highest number of seats, legally has the right to form the government. Even if TVK had failed to form the government, there was no chance for the DMK or AIADMK to form the government”. “President’s rule would have been imposed instead. That would literally be the BJP government in power. It was only to prevent that from happening that we supported TVK,” he noted. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has given them an assurance that he will not make any compromises regarding secular principles, he recalled. “Even in the Governor’s address, it has been clarified that the government’s policy is to make no compromises on matters like secularism and social justice,” he said. “Similarly, the support of Marxists will remain firm. Therefore, TVK can continue its governance with confidence and courage. There is no need to fear that we will withdraw our support at any moment,” Mr. Shanmugam observed. Securing 1.75 crore votes within just two years of starting the party was something unprecedented in the history of Tamil Nadu. “This government must fulfil the trust and expectations of the people. There is no meaning in our DMK friends getting angry with us,” he said. Speaking to journalists, he said, “To manage the debt burden and implement public welfare schemes without disruption, the government must make serious efforts to increase its revenue. In the past, since the licenses for mining mineral resources like sand and granite were given to private entities, the entire profit went only to private parties.” He added that if the government itself sells them, it would generate thousands of crores of rupees in revenue. The government should think about increasing the State revenue without imposing any burden on the people, he added. He added that in sexual offence cases, the trials must be conducted swiftly through fast-track courts to ensure immediate punishment for the criminals. Published - June 20, 2026 08:24 pm IST
