The State secretary of the CPI(M), P. Shanmugam, on Tuesday (May 26, 2026), said the role of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in encouraging the AIADMK MLAs to resign their posts was unacceptable.“The resignation of MLAs within 20 days of their election and their admission into the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is unacceptable,” he told The Hindu. The TVK has the outside support of the two Left parties while the VCK, Indian Union Muslim League and the Congress have joined the government.Mr. Shanmugam said said people were not ready to believe the argument that the AIADMK MLAs had joined the ruling party after resigning their posts without expecting anything in return. No guarantee of re-electionAsked whether the ruling party was moving towards creating a situation in which the support of the Left parties, the VCK and the Congress would no longer be required for the survival of the government, Mr. Shanmugam said there was no guarantee that those who had resigned would get re-elected.“When these incidents are creating a mindset against the ruling party, there is no guarantee that the sentiments that existed on April 23 (day of polling for Assembly election) will remain the same over the next six months. We need not come to the conclusion that they will win the elections. But the approach of the ruling party is not good,” he said. Published - May 26, 2026 04:55 pm IST
