Chennai Metrowater on Saturday disconnected water supply connections to about 20 residential and commercial premises at Taramani after they were found illegally drawing water from pipelines using motor pumps.Following complaints about erratic water supply in the area, a team of officials conducted inspection on Saturday in Division 13 covering streets such as Ramasamy Street, Anjugam Ammal Street, Raniammal Street, Bharathiyar Street, and Kattabomman Street in Thanthai Periyar Nagar, Taramani.They found that some commercial establishments and hostels were illegally extracting water from pipelines using high-powered electric motors. The team disconnected piped water supply and also seized the motors.Officials said electric motors were seized last year too for illegal drinking water extraction. Action is being initiated to impose fine and withhold new water connections for a stipulated period.Surveillance would continue in residential areas as well, and any motors found to be illegally extracting water from drinking water pipelines would also be seized, officials added.
