Residents of Bejai and Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath have alleged that contaminated water was being supplied to Bejai New Road and some other parts of the city.In a letter to MCC Commissioner Ravichandra Naik, members of the Resotica Apartment Owners Association, Bejai New Road, said underground drainage repair work had recently been carried out in the area. After the work was completed, residents of the apartment complex experienced deterioration in the quality of piped drinking water. Water samples were tested at a laboratory, and the reports showed that the water was not potable. The association urged Mr. Naik to conduct an immediate inspection in the area and find the possible source of contamination and take corrective measures. If there were deficiencies in the execution of drainage repair work in the area, action should be taken against those responsible, the association said.In a statement, Mr. Kamath said that, apart from Bejai New Road, residents of Battagudde, Kadri and Chilimbi had also been getting contaminated water for the past few days, causing health issues. Water samples were tested at the Bejai Urban Primary Health Centre and the Mangalore Biotech Laboratory, Pumpwell, and the water was found to be not fit to drink. In the absence of elected councillors, the State government should take the blame for the callous attitude of MCC officials towards complaints about the distribution of contaminated water, the MLA said.Responding to the allegations, Mr. Naik said all wards were being supplied with potable drinking water and samples were being checked at regular intervals to ensure quality. He said that following complaints from residents of Bejai New Road and Battagudde, samples from Noodu Lane in Bejai and Fifth Cross Road in Battagudde were tested, the sources of contamination were plugged and potable water was restored. Those with complaints about water supply could call the MCC helpline at 0824-2220303, Mr. Naik said.MLC Ivan D’Souza, who visited the MCC water treatment plant in Bendoor on Friday, asked Deputy Commissioner H.V. Darshan, who is acting as MCC Administrator, to set up a committee to find the cause of contamination in Bejai and Battagudde. Published - June 19, 2026 07:53 pm IST
