Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will go for rationing of drinking water supply from May 1. The MCC will supply water on alternate days, according to H. V. Darshan, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada and Administrator of the civic body.
Speaking to press persons on the sidelines of the monthly phone-in programme with people of the city on April 24, the Administrator said that rationing will be done to ensure that there is no drop in pressure in pipelines while supplying water to areas at an elevation. With this, there will be equitable distribution of water to all wards.
Usually consumption of water increases during summer resulting in drop in pressure level in pipelines, which affect areas at an elevation.
Mr. Darshan said that pumping of water from Thumbe vented dam to the city will not be stopped. Pumping will go on round-the-clock. Rationing will be done only at the distribution level.
He said water level at Thumbe dam stood at 4.53 metres against the maximum storage level of 6 metres on April 24. Due to rains in the catchment areas of the Netravati, the inflow in the river has not completely stopped in this summer. The AMR vented dam on the upstream of Thumbe is almost full. Hence, if required, water from AMR dam can be released to Thumbe dam at any time.
