The Special Court for Prevention of Corruption here has awarded three years imprisonment to a DMK functionary for causing loss to the government to the tune of ₹1.20 crore by giving permission for a housing plot layout.According to Public Prosecutor M. Bharath Rathna, an individual, who sliced 7.43 acres of land near Kalakkad in the district into 165 housing plots approached, the Kalakkad Town Panchayat in 2011 for getting approval for the layout.Even though the layout did not conform to the stipulated norms of the town and country planning on various counts, including allotting a portion of this layout for public utility, then chairman of Kalakkad Town Panchayat P. C. Rajan and Executive Officer A. Muthukumar gave approval for the layout, which caused a loss of ₹1.20 crore to the government.As the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Wing commenced probe into it, Investigating Officer D. Robin Gnanasingh found that Rajan and Muthukumar had caused this huge loss to the government by giving approval for a layout that did not fulfil the norms of the government and filed a case against them.Special Judge for Prevention of Corruption Court Subbaiah awarded three years imprisonment to Rajan, who is the vice-chairman of Kalakkad Municipality now, and Muthukumar on Friday.
