Former England goalkeeper Mary Earps is set to make a significant return to English football, joining Women’s Super League side London City Lionesses following her departure from Paris St Germain. The move, announced by the club, brings one of the sport's most recognisable figures back to the domestic league.Earps, 33, a pivotal member of the England squad that secured the Euro 2022 title and reached the 2023 World Cup final, will officially commence her tenure with the Lionesses on 1 July. This follows the conclusion of her two-season spell in the French capital, having previously signed for PSG from Manchester United.London City Lionesses, owned by American billionaire Michele Kang, enjoyed a successful introduction to the WSL last year, impressively finishing sixth in the table during their debut season.Earps won the Euros with England in 2022 (Getty)Expressing her excitement for the new chapter, Earps shared her motivations: "I’m over the moon to join this club and I’m really looking forward to it. I feel the club aligns with what I stand for. I can’t wait to get started and to get down to business."She further elaborated on the club's appeal, stating: "The club’s values represent what I want to represent and they are passionate about what I want to achieve and change the game in a positive way. All the conversations have been really positive and every time I spoke with the club I wanted to hear more."Earps also highlighted the ambitious vision driving her decision: "The vision and ambition, including the new training facility, is incredible and I’m looking forward to seeing that develop. It shows what our owner Michele (Kang) and everyone at the club want to do in terms of really going for it."Looking ahead to the challenges, the 53-cap England international acknowledged the competitive landscape. She added: "It won’t be easy, the WSL is extremely competitive. The team had a brilliant [debut] season finishing mid-table in their first season, now it’s about climbing the table and working towards finishing as high as possible."Earps retired from international football last year and also released an autobiography, where she was critical of England boss Sarina Wiegman and fellow goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.
