As South Africa observes Youth Month, attention turns to the role young people play in shaping the country’s future, alongside growing conversations about their safety, wellbeing, and development in digital spaces.
Meta is taking a wider approach to teen online safety, aiming to create more supportive, age-appropriate across its platforms. The goal is to build safer, more positive digital spaces where teens can connect, learn, and express themselves with better protection and guidance, while also helping busy parents by providing useful tools to oversee their teens’ online activities.

Teen Accounts automatically come with private settings enabled. This means teens must approve new followers, and people who don’t follow them cannot view or interact with their content. And with Teen Accounts teens under 16 need a parent’s permission to change any settings to be less strict.
