Poland will not recognize decisions on security issues and relations with Russia adopted at the EU leadership level or within specific formats, in particular the E3 (France, Germany, and the United Kingdom), without Warsaw’s participation.
According to Ukrinform, citing Rmf24, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made this statement to EU leaders during a summit in Brussels.
As the publication notes, the contacts between European Council President António Costa and Moscow sparked a heated debate among the leaders. In particular, some EU leaders criticized Costa’s actions, as he established ties with Moscow without informing all EU member states in advance.
At the same time, according to the publication, the discussion focused not only on the contacts themselves but also on how they were conducted and on the risk of political consequences—according to one diplomatic source, Poland, the Baltic states, and some Scandinavian countries warned against placing excessive trust in the Kremlin. For his part, Costa explained to the leaders that he is not conducting any substantive negotiations with Russia, but is merely maintaining channels of communication so that the EU would be prepared for possible peace talks. He also pointed out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky himself has repeatedly called for greater EU involvement in the peace process.
