While a university degree can improve job prospects, it is not the only route into the labour market.

South Africa's unemployment rate remains stubbornly high, especially among people who do not hold tertiary qualifications. However, a university degree is not the only pathway to securing employment.

Several industries continue to offer opportunities for job seekers without degrees, provided they possess the required skills, vocational training or professional certifications.

According to the latest data, the overall unemployment rate stands at 33.7%, but the situation is significantly worse among young people and those without tertiary education.

"Education continues to play a pivotal role in determining young people’s employment prospects," Stats SA previously said.
