The University of Cape Town (UCT) has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative with the launch of the UCT Nelson Mandela Memorial Centre and School of Public Governance Architectural Design Competition. The competition invites architects and designers across Africa to participate in crafting a permanent space that embodies Mandela's legacy and values.
Set against the scenic backdrop of UCT’s Upper Campus, the project will not only serve as a new home for the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, but will also establish a living memorial that seeks to engage in dialogue, education, and community development. The site, perched at the edge of the mountain, is a unique blend of ecological restoration and cultural significance, echoing transformation and hope.
Endorsed by the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA) and conducted in collaboration with the African Union of Architects (AUA), the competition aims to attract innovative architectural ideas and perspectives from the continent, ensuring a broad participation from both new and established architects.
Structured in two stages, the competition encourages participants to think creatively about the synergistic relationship between architecture, landscape, and public spaces. The goal is to create a site of enduring relevance that responds to memorial, educational, and civic ambitions, promoting a sense of community and belonging among users.
