Deputy President Paul Mashatile said government is reinforcing SAPS integrity measures, including vetting, investigations and disciplinary reviews, while responding to parliamentary concerns over corruption and oversight failures.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile faced questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Thursday over government’s handling of corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS), as MPs pressed him on whether oversight failures had allowed wrongdoing to persist within the South African Police Service.

Mashatile appeared before the NCOP on Thursday to respond to oral questions from Members of Parliament on corruption in SAPS, the effectiveness of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster, and broader governance interventions within the criminal justice system.

He told MPs that government had already implemented measures to detect and prevent corruption within SAPS through specialised units, saying these interventions were in place even before the establishment of the Madlanga Commission.

Mashatile said the JCPS cluster continues to coordinate corrective actions aimed at strengthening accountability and tackling corruption within the police service.
