Former Prime Minister and Lotofaga Member of Parliament Fiame Naomi Mataafa has urged parliament to carefully examine the government’s 2026/2027 budget, saying the national spending plan must clearly reflect Samoa’s development priorities and commitment to good governance.

Speaking during the 26/27 budget debate Thursday evening, Fiame said the budget is the second prepared under the new administration and should be viewed as part of the continuing work of government. “The truth is, we must look ahead,” she told parliament.

Fiame said members had an opportunity to assess whether the budget properly supports the country’s policies and long-term direction. She focused on three areas of governance: good governance, executive governance and administrative authorities.

She said while the government often speaks about good governance, only a small amount of money appears to be set aside for reserves.

Fiame questioned whether the allocation of funds across sectors properly supports development, reserves and the effective management of public resources. “If spending is at a high level, what will be left for Samoa’s future development?” she said.
