In an era where loyalty in professional football has roughly the shelf life of a grocery store avocado, Nico Williams is doing something genuinely unusual. The Athletic Bilbao winger has committed his future to the Basque club through June 30, 2035, publicly stating he would sign now to spend his entire career at the club that raised him.
The contract extension, announced on July 4, 2025, includes a release clause of approximately €90 million.
The heart wins over the checkbook
Williams has been refreshingly direct about what drove his decision. His reasoning boils down to something you don’t hear often in modern football’s mercenary landscape: emotion.
“When decisions have to be made, what weighs most is the heart.”
