A man has been arrested on a charge of attempted murder after a three year old boy ended up in the crocodile enclosure at a British zoo. Several media reports have reported the child was “thrown” into the enclosure but that has not been confirmed. The incident happened at a zoo in the Huntingdonshire region of England’s east on Thursday, UK time. In a statement Cambridgeshire Constabulary said its officers were called to the Johnson’s of Old Hurst Zoo at around 1.30pm after reports of an incident involving a three-year-old boy, during which he ended up in the crocodile enclosure.The boy was taken to Addenbrooke’s, a major hospital in the nearby city of Cambridge. He is said to have suffered a serious arm injury but remains in a stable condition. A 30-year-old man from the neighbouring county of Norfolk has been arrested on suspicion of attempt murder, police stated.“At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances,” Detective Inspector Verity McCann of Cambridgeshire Constabulary said.“We do not believe the man arrested and the child are known to each other.“Officers are supporting the boy’s family at hospital, and our thoughts remain with them.”According to The Sun, the zoo owner’s wife Tracey Johnson, is said to have leapt into a crocodile pit to save the boy.Johnson’s of Old Hurst is a cattle farm, steakhouse and small zoo in the village of Old Hurst, 9km north of the regional centre of Huntingdon.The attraction is run by Andy Johnson with the repute house reopened in 2019, according to the Eastern Daily Press. The building, formerly a cattle shed, is home to crocodiles, alligators, iguanas and turtles. The website says the zoo has over 100 “fascinating” animals “from majestic African lions to incredible crocodiles” as well as kangaroos. Parts of the zoo closed on Thursday after the incident. In a statement, it said it’s “thoughts and prayers are with the boy and his family”. “Out of respect to the family our Tropical House will remain closed until further notice”.
