June 19 (UPI) -- British authorities have arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after a 3-year-old child ended up in a zoo's crocodile enclosure.

The incident occurred at 1:24 p.m. local time Thursday at Johnsons of Old Hurst, a family-run farm that includes a shop, tropical house, tearoom and a small zoo, among other attractions, in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

The boy was retrieved from the enclosure and taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, Cambridgeshire Constabulary said in a statement, adding that the child was in critical but stable condition.

Specifics of the incident were not immediately clear, but police said they do not believe the man, identified as a resident of Norfolk, and the child were known to one another.

"At this stage we are speaking to people who were at the zoo at the time of this distressing incident to understand more about the circumstances," Detective Inspector Verity McCann said.
