New Delhi: NDA-supported Independent candidate Parimal Nathwani on Thursday pulled off a surprise win in the Rajya Sabha election from Jharkhand, defeating the ruling INDIA bloc's Congress nominee for the second seat despite the alliance appearing to have the numbers.The NDA had 24 votes and required four more to secure victory. The INDIA bloc, on paper, had 56 votes - exactly enough to win both seats.When the results were declared, JMM candidate Baidyanath Ram secured 30 votes, two more than the 28 required for election. Nathwani polled 28 valid votes - exactly the winning mark - while Congress candidate Pranav Jha managed only 20 valid votes. Three votes were declared invalid.Voting had begun with the INDIA bloc confident of winning both seats. Sources told ET that of the JMM's 34 MLAs, 30 voted for the party's nominee, Baidyanath Ram, as a safeguard against any invalid vote. The remaining four votes were transferred to the Congress. With its own 16 MLAs and four JMM votes, the Congress expected to secure 20 votes.Nathwani received the support of 21 BJP MLAs and one vote each from JD(U), AJSU and LJP (Ram Vilas). He also secured the backing of JLKM MLA Jairam Mahto.The RJD has four MLAs in the Assembly, while CPI(ML) has two. It was among these six votes that cross-voting appears to have taken place. Nathwani is understood to have received all six votes, taking his total to 30, though two of these were declared invalid. One vote cast for Jha was also declared invalid, leaving him with 20 valid votes.After his victory, Nathwani thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other NDA leaders for the support.
