An international panel of experts in atopic dermatitis (AD) has established key new clinical definitions intended to help standardize research and clinical care.

The consensus statement appears in JAMA Dermatology.

Experts agreed on four disease states: off-drug remission, on-drug complete control, very low disease activity (vLDA), and low disease activity (LDA).

First author Joseph Merola, MD, MMSC, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology, Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Rheumatic Diseases, and Professor in the Peter O'Donnell Jr. School of Public Health at UT Southwestern Medical Center. The authors were not available for interview, but we have distilled and organized excerpts from the paper into a Q&A format to make it useful for readers.

Why was it important to establish standardized definitions for AD?
