An international panel of experts has formed recommendations for improving dermatology care for people with skin of color (SOC).
Proposed areas of focus range from potential terminology changes to physician education to artificial intelligence (AI) to representation in research. The paper appears in the International Journal of Dermatology.
First author, Henry Lim, MD, is a physician-researcher with and former chair of the department of dermatology at Henry Ford Health in Michigan. The following article excerpts were edited for length and clarity.
What was the context behind the formation of this panel?
Lim and colleagues: Addressing disparities in dermatology for SOC requires a multifaceted approach. By advancing research-based knowledge on SOC, creating a global SOC pathology image library, enhancing medical education through training and scholarships, as well as patient education, dermatologists can improve both care quality and patient outcomes.
