Operating earlier on the Kacheguda–Mangaluru Central–Kacheguda route, the service was extended to Murdeshwar in October 2024 following popular demand, particularly to provide better connectivity to Tirumala–Tirupati for people from coastal Karnataka. Following the success of that extension, the service has now been further extended to Kumta in response to requests from passengers.

The Ministry of Railways has extended the service of Train No. 12789/12790 Kacheguda–Murdeshwar–Kacheguda Bi-Weekly Express upto Kumta in Uttara Kannada district with effect from June 19 from Kacheguda and June 20 from Kumta.Train No. 12789 departs Kacheguda at 6.05 a.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays and reaches Kumta at 2.40 p.m. the following day. The train departs Murdeshwar at 1.48 p.m. en route to Kumta.On its return service, Train No. 12790 will leave Kumta at 3.25 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It will depart Murdeshwar at 4.04 p.m., Bhatkal at 4.20 p.m., Mookambika Road Byndoor at 4.37 p.m., Kundapura at 5.04 p.m., Barkur at 5.20 p.m., Udupi at 5.37 p.m. and Mangaluru Central at 8 p.m., reaching Kacheguda at 11.40 p.m. the following day, according to a release issued by the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL).Operating earlier on the Kacheguda–Mangaluru Central–Kacheguda route, the service was extended to Murdeshwar in October 2024 following popular demand, particularly to provide better connectivity to Tirumala–Tirupati for people from coastal Karnataka.
