Police in Mpumalanga have launched an investigation after a 69-year-old Canadian tourist was fatally shot at a concession-operated braai picnic site near Phabeni Gate in the Kruger National Park on Wednesday evening.

According to preliminary findings, the tourist was attending a bush braai organised by a private concession operator when the fatal incident occurred.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said the victim allegedly approached a concession operator who was holding a rifle and asked whether the firearm was real.

"It is alleged that the 69-year-old male tourist approached the concession operator, who was holding a rifle, and asked if it was a real firearm. While the operator was demonstrating that it was a real rifle, and that was at the time when the firearm reportedly discharged," Masondo said.
